Transfiguration Classroom

"Welcome, first years, to Transfiguration. Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts. Anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back. You have been warned. Now, before you get all excited and turn yourselves-or your classmates- into pigs, there are some basic rules we need to go over.." McGonagall droned. She was getting quite tired of scaring the pants off of first years, especially since they had decided to place all the houses together.
At once.
In the same classroom.

Serenity had taken a seat next to the window, and was already drooling on her desk. As much as she wanted to become an animagus, those dreams were far, far away...
Until McGonagall turned the desk into a pig, right before their very eyes.
She sat straight up, her eyes widening. It was right then she decided she wanted to do well in transfiguration. She could turn all Angel's books into doves and make them fly away..

"Now, for today, we'll be trying to turn these matches into needles." McGonagall chose students to pass out the matches to everyone.

"Amanda, look! We get to do magic!" Growing up in a Pureblood household, Rachel had always been around magic, but she had always been forbidden to perform anything herself.

"Look, look! I'm doing it!" Rachel was swishing her wand back and forth. The matchstick twitched at the slightest.

Having been late and missing the prime choice of seating, Mel was beside a rather tall, raven-haired girl she didn't recognize. She stared intensely at the matchstick, wand in her lap. "Did she give us an incantation...?" she wondered out loud.

Amanda nodded, feigning immense excitement. Her parents were pretty loose when it came to magic, and in all honesty she had been studying a disgusting amount before school came around.

With a short swish, Amanda's match had a metallic appearance.

Thinking the short, kind of loud actually, girl was speaking to her, Amanda turned.

"Not really. You just kind of have to flail and hope for the best."

Rachel looked over at Mel, and smiled. "Oh, Mel! Have you met Amanda yet?" she asked, ignoring both her work and Professor McGonagall.

Serenity poked the match with her wand several times, tilting her head to one side, as if that would help.
"Um.. Come on. Neeeedle." She mumbled to it, poking it again.

The needle promptly caught on fire.
"O-Oh, shit.. Libby!" Serenity hissed, tapping her on the back, trying to avoid the growing flame. "Libby, help me."

Libby turned around, and her eyes widened. "Shoot!" she hissed under her breath, and looked around. "How the heck did you manage to do that?!"

Nicolas had gotten lost and arrived at class later than most everyone else. He had taken one of the only available seats - next to this curly-haired brunette boy. Nicolas was too shy to say anything, so he just worked on turning his match into a needle. This was achieved in just a few minutes' time, so he sat there awkwardly, not sure what to do.

"Ugh." Mel pointed her wand at the matchstick, frowning in concentration. She did the standard swish-and-flick. The stick promptly transfigured into a shining, silver needle. She squealed in joy -- and express shock. "Yes!" she exclaimed. "Holy cow!"

"I don't know, it just kind of happened! I poked it with my wand and.. It's a match, for God's sake, they shouldn't be giving us these! We're in school!" Serenity exclaimed. The match just kept burning.
"Do something!"

"Heeeey!" Max jabbed the short blonde kid beside him with the end of his wand, resulting in red and gold firework like sparks to shoot out of them. "Oops, sorry!" he fanned them away quickly, but he was soon smiling once again.

"I have a question about this-how did you do it? I got mine to turn to silver, but it's not made of metal or pointy. Can you show me?"

"Meeeeeel?" Rachel said, tapping her shoulder. He matchstick was completely normal, as Rachel had forgotten about her assignment.

Amanda genuinely smiled. "See! Focused flailing. PS, it's nice to meet you."

"Who are you-- What?" Mel said, glancing back at Rachel.

Amanda looked down, now blushing. She forgot that this girl has no idea who she was, and the same went for her. She probably seemed really weird.


"I'm Amanda- Amanda Potter."

"I was just wondering if you had met Mel!"

"I don't know what to do! Call Professor McGonagall over here!" Libby tried fanning the fire, but it just increased in size. Given, it was a small flame (more of a flicker than anything), but it was still terrifying.

Nicolas looked over at this guy, rubbing the arm that had just been sparked. "Um, well, I just focused really hard and made sure I was very precise with my movements." He wasn't really sure how to explain what he did, it just kind of happened. But he couldn't help but feel an immense sense of pride by not only being a Muggle-born and doing magic correctly on the first day, but also being asked for help! How exciting!

She looked back at Amanda. "I guess I have now-- Oh, you're the other Potter?" she asked, eyebrows popping up like fresh toast.

Amanda nodded, pushing her hair out her face, "That's what people have been calling me!"

"That's weird. These things usually come with an incantation." Max began waving around his arm rather violently, and there was a high chance he could take out the guy he was sitting next to's eye.

But with a brief swishing movement, the needle turned opaque, the end immediately sharpened. "Yes, I did!" Max said, bumping his fist against the desk, causing Nicolas' needle to topple over.

"By the way, I'm Max. Are you in Ravenclaw? That's interesting."

Mel scanned the girl's face rather obviously, pushing up to get a slightly closer look. "Ooh, I see it. You've got the same eyes."

Amanda blinked, surprised by the sudden interest, but in any case, she nodded. "They were, uh, apparently our mum's."

"A-Aaah!" Serenity wailed. "No, you do it, I don't want her to be mad at me.. Oh, hold on!"
She fished around in her bag for a minute, before pulling out a juice box full of pumpkin juice. Serenity flailed around with the straw for a few moments before stabbing a hole in it, and pouring a little bit over the fire, which promptly went out.
"There.."

McGonagall had seemed to appear right behind her. "Miss Rosensteel. Five points from Gryffindor for not informing a teacher of a fire.. One point back for creatively using Pumpkin Juice." She said, with a bit of a smirk across her face.

"Take another match-- this time, don't catch it on fire. Wave the wand, don't.. Poke." She said with disdain, walking away to check on other students.
"Mr. Sawyer, is it? Very good, five points to Ravenclaw. You too, Ms. Astor, five for you-- You look just like your brother. Very good at Transfiguration, you know.."

"That's beautiful. I've got my papa's eyes, I think." You couldn't see her eyes even if you tried. "Or my brothers'. She slouched slightly, grumbling. "You know, apparently we look alike."

Amanda slightly smiled, looking for Mel's eyes among the mass of bangs. She was unsuccessful. "You know, I've heard that. But I met you first! In my book that means he is the luck one who looks e you!"

Libby sighed. "Well, that worked. At least we didn't lose much!"

Nicolas picked up his needle. "Good job! I'm Nicolas. Ravenclaw's nice, I guess... um... you're in..." Nicolas leaned forward to look at the crest on Max's chest. "Gryffindor?" Five points to Ravenclaw? He remembered McGonagall had explained the point system right before the feast. He had earned points for his house on his very first day! This really couldn't get any better!

Rachel looked over at the two girls and grinned. "Oh, Mel does. You could tell when she didn't have that horrible haircut. Oh fuck, I think I broke my matchstick." Rachel cursed, showing them the two pieces.

"Yep, I'm in Gryffindor!" Max off handedly began to poke the needle at one of the wood carvings on the desk. "It's really fun, and I think we have the best House ghost. I mean, he can do this weird trick with his head! But some of the people are really annoying. Like..." his voice dropped to a whisper, and he pointed at a girl sitting by herself with a bushy head of hair.

"That Hermione Granger is full of it. Just because she reads all the time! But don't you think that Serenity Rosensteel is good looking?" he said, pointing at the girl with the glossy blonde hair and the scorch marks on ehr desk.
