| Unless you enjoyed watching people eating, a soup kitchen was possibly one of the dullest places on Earth. Especially this one, where to Rachel who came from a home where everything was polished and scrubbed down to the the last, minute detail, it was as filthy as it was dull. It was gray like the dreary English sky, and the occupants were just as gray as they silently dined. Even the radio sounded gray to Rachel, where the music came out half static, and the radio could only get dumb Muggle stations that afternoon.
"Consider the fruit flies on the week old bread. They do not toil-they just relish in the mold and their own shit." Rachel remembered the Bible verse bitterly. She was as much of a lily than any of those dumb old flies. So why was she toiling?
It was her mother's doing. She was tired of seeing her daughter stretched out on the sofa, reading yellowed issues of Witches Weekly from years past. To occupy her time, she sent her daughter's to do "God's work", which was feeding the poor.
So Rachel in a smelly apron and her hair up found herself scrubbing the plates free of food half eaten by drugged up tramps.
"God should just eradicate sin if He wanted something done in this world." she said half to herself, as she cast a scrubbing spell on a tray, to make the work go faster.

| One of the tramps shuffled forward in line, casually dropping his tray on the metal rack in front of the cafeteria window and sliding it along. Hygienically, he wasn't quite at the bottom tier. He looked like he had at least attempted a shave in the last week, though his neck fluff grew thick and wild and matted to itself by what could very well have been motor oil. He wore a plain plaid shirt over a black high v-neck and a pair of well-worn out levis. "Skip the macaroni," he said to the worker, tacking on a "please" under his breath. | |

| "Right..." Rachel mumbled, and she swiftly began to pile some unidentifiable meat, some molded over potato salad, and a half baked chocolate chip cookie onto the tray. Though she only glanced up once, that was enough to make her almost drop the tray.
"Elroy Astor. What are you doing not mooching off your parents?" Rachel asked, with a sly smile on the corner of her mouth.

| "Got chewed up, spit out, pried self off sidewalk and here I was." Elroy took the tray off the bar and headed to a table, clearly uninterested in talking to the smug bitch he happened to have the misfortune of growing up with. | |

| "Wait!" Rachel ignored her work, and she chased after her old classmate. Without asking, she sat right across from him, on the other side of the cafeteria table.
"Wait, so this is what you've been doing since you've graduated? Living on the streets?" she asked, with a sort of vile fascination.

| "Don't you have to... like, work," he asked in a deadpan tone, chunk of meat taking up his left cheek, gesturing toward the counter with his gravy-stained fork. | |

| "They won't care. They know I can't do work for shit." Rachel sniffed a bit. "I wasn't cut out for that sort of thing. I was meant to uh... look pretty, or something." That wasn't quite the case. | |

| "That's some vanity, there," he said, gnawing away at the gristle. "That'll kill you." | |

| "So will that," Rachel pointed a finger and wrinkled her nose at the odd meat substance. "If not, you'll get some really bad food poisoning, I bet." | |

| "I've had their pot roast before." So that's what it was. "A bit of the bends, but other than that, it's right keen." | |

| "If you're sure." Rachel watched him eat for a while, before she stuck out her lower lip in a pout at him.
""Elroy, look. I know we aren't even friends, and you probably don't want me sitting here, so it's probably no real concern of mine-but are you happy just... laying around out here? Eating pot roast? Wearing plaid?"

| Elroy squinted slightly, looking up at the flickering fluorescent above them, then at his overshirt. "Something against plaid?" | |

| "Elroy, the 90s are pretty much over. In a year or two, you're going to look horribly backward. But..." Rachel reached out, and touched the grimy flannel.
"At least it's soft." That's all she could give it.
