There was the semi-annual auction sale/trade occurring. People from all over the area, as well as sometimes even farther were here, and were all dressed in fashionable Victorian-esque styles; men in top hats and women in lacy dressed pulled into corsets with umbrellas and flowery hats.

However, on the platform, as well as behind the platform and out of sight, there were slaves. Some were clad in chains, others just hanging by their vendors or masters. It was almost a happy scene, with people walking around and conversing, as the auction hadn't even begun yet, and there were waiters walking around with platters of drinks and such.

"What a perfect day for the auction," sighed Mr. Brackendale, the auction-er(?) as he took a nibble of the piece of cheese and cranberry jam he had, his dark mustache trembling with each word. It was, indeed, a nice day for an auction, as there wasn't a cloud in sight.

Kelsi was behind the platform, with other slaves. Behind the platform wasn't as nice. Since the ground gaped down a little, all the slaves were standing in a small puddle of mud and water from the showers the previous evening. It smelled foul, as the wastes were being kept a few feet away, and there was a rodent chewing on a fallen piece of bread.

Kelsi had a dark look of resentment, and was leaning against the platform with her arms crossed. She had a chain around her foot to prevent her from running away. Not that there was anywhere to run; she had already checked her surroundings.

Wealthy bachelor Andrew Brown, who had recently come into possession of a recently-built plantation home with many acres of land, decided that he needed new furniture and servants for help around the property. He wanted it to be fit for a future family--one that would grow up living in comfort, unlike he did.

Andrew was not only scouting for material items, but also for future ladies. Many had arrived, but, unfortunately, most were accompanied by a gentleman. Drew's eyes finally landed on a young lass standing near a much older woman, presumably her aging mother; a fan hid all of this young lady's face but her eyes, which met Drew's gaze and held it momentarily.

Mr. Brackendale stepped up onto the platform and raised a hand to get everyone's attention. The chattering quieted, and all eyes turned to Mr. Brackendale. "Hello, hello, it's great to see all these familiar faces, as well as new ones too! As you can tell, we're about to start the auction. So you know how it works; if you don't just ask the person next to you, it's really quite simple," he called out, and then smiled at them all. "Now a toast to a wonderful day," and he raised his glass, then placed it to his lips.

The auction began smoothly. Slaves were brought up, usually alone, or in groups of two or three, depending on the chain distribution to each slave. Some were sold, others brought down for the later round. Prices were raising higher and some slaves came up to the hefty price of forty five dollars. These were, of course, the big burly slaves who were young and fit. The women came a little cheaper, unless they were built similarly to the men.

Finally, Kelsi was brought up, and stood individually on the stage. With the chains weighing down on her thin wrists, it pulled her back down into a slouch. She stared at the floor, her nose wrinkled into a scowl. Her small, weak-looking figure clearly had her falling into a lower price range than the previous slaves before her; two tall black men who were rather muscular. She lifted a hand, her other hand following behind as she brushed a thick strand of hair behind her ear, and tucked the tip into the bandana around her head. As she did this, she looked around at the crowd of people.

"Well, what have we got a-here? A small slave, around the age of sixteen or seventeen, female." He pulled at the nametag around her neck and looked up. "By the name of Kalyani! We'll start at 28, any bids?"

And so, the bidding began.

Drew had purchased some furniture at this auction already--all of which had been loaded into a large carriage that was attended by a good friend of his--but he had not yet purchased a slave. He had been looking for the right one: cheap, but young and with good potential. This one, Kalyani, seemed like the perfect fit for Drew's needs.

A few men stepped up to the stage to examine Kalyani--rather roughly, at that. Drew was the last one, and he delicately held her chin between his index finger and thumb. He turned her head--to the side, to examine her jawline. From a distance, she looked like a negro, but up-close it was evident that she was of other descent. Indian, perhaps?

Whatever the case, she was perfect.

In that very moment there was a strong juxtaposition--a tall, wealthy, suited and shined Caucasian man standing next to a small, poor, dirty Indian slave woman. Drew's eyes met hers, and he held her gaze for a moment. His fingers left her body and he took his leave of the stage without saying a word.

The bidding commenced feverishly. Although her price was significantly raised, Drew knew that this woman held promise--and he ended up buying her for fifty dollars and fifty cents.

[[Perfect for Drew's needs?? :A]]

A few men taking care of the auction came to the stage and undid Kelsi's chains, instead tying her into ropes, then pulling her roughly down the steps. She followed behind without bothering to show that she was stubborn, until she was in front of the ridiculously tall man again.

Kelsi was, in fact, quite stunned. She was just sold for just over fifty dollars. She wouldn't even be that useful, other than being quick and swift at moving smaller cargo. She stood there, without saying a word, and in fact avoiding eye contact. She had caught a glimpse at his bright blue eyes earlier on the stage, and it had startled- almost scared her.

She instead glared at the ground as though it were a filthy pile of horse dumps.
